Dressing to Cope With Extreme Temperatures in Spain

In the UK we are forever complaining about not knowing what to put on in the morning in preparation for the day’s unpredictable weather. The problem with the summer in Spain is more one which concerns too much predictably in that he weather is often predictably too hot. This makes it difficult for people who spend their working day in chilly air conditioned offices, only to step out into furnace like temperatures at the end of the day. The intense heat can make you feel constantly sweaty and bedraggled, not a good look for the work place or any place for that matter.

Take note of the following advice to feel as fresh as when you first stepped outside, all day long:

  • Wear clothes made from natural fabrics e.g. linen and cotton. This is really important where underwear is concerned as man made fibres in hot condition can result in yeast infections.
  • If it’s chilly in the morning put on a jacket with three quarter length sleeves to allow some arm ventilation.
  • Go for fresh light colours. A crisp white sleeveless shirt is always cool but smart worn with this season’s city shorts or a flippy a-line skirt with sandals.
  • Avoid plunging necklines, short skirts, vests sheer blouses and cloth handbags for work.
  • Some people think that wearing next to nothing will help them to stay cool. This really isn’t true. You can still dress 'decently' and keep cool.
  • Avoid full make up in the heat. Opt for tinted moisturiser, mascara and lip gloss. Keep hair tied back to avoid it sticking all over your face.

Some great clothes for keeping cool whilst looking smart include:

A line skirts
Floaty dresses
City shorts with a smart sleeveless shirt
Lightweight wrap dresses
Puff sleeve t shirts
Linen trousers

At the other end of the spectrum is the winter in Spain and it does get pretty chilly especially indoors. In fact, there is often a fight to be seated next to the heater.

Make sure you invest in the following to keep warm:

  • Thermal Underwear – very necessary as it means that you don’t have too pile on too many layers.
  • Thick opaque tights
  • This season’s leggings trend is ideal for wearing under knitted dresses and sweater dresses
  • A warm coat
  • Chunky knitwear
  • Pashminas
  • Warm socks for cold feet
  • Cosy pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers are a must for home comfort.
  • Good quality knee high boots to wear with skirts and dresses and over skinny jeans.
  • A good winter coat as it can get very cold
  • A strong brolly for the windy rain that can last for days.
