new life spain

Megan's Story

I am Megan and I am thirty four. I came to Spain at the start of the millennium. It was a fresh start for me and my husband Steve. We were newly weds and wanted a new start in a new country. When a job opportunity in real estate came up for Steve in Marbella, it seemed like fate. I managed to find a job within the same company as Steve. Fortunately, it was a big company so we weren’t working together but we could keep our costs down at the time by sharing a car etc.

We were just starting off so we didn’t have a lot of spare cash. However, after a couple of years we had put a fair bit of money aside, enough to buy an off plan town house and to start planning a family. Now after eight years we have two children India,5 and Samuel,2. I had both children here, both times at the Costa Del Sol Hospital. I have to say that I have been impressed by the standard of healthcare throughout my pregnancy although there wasn’t any support post delivery as family are expected to help. I am lucky that my parents now divide their time between the UK and their apartment in Estepona. They are a great help to us and we really enjoy the summer months when we all go out in the evenings with the children, which is something that you can’t do in England. I think it would be tougher if I didn’t have my family on had for most of the year as I see so many mums struggling without their family support.

I don’t go back that often to the UK, maybe twice a year. I have to say that I do miss the shops and the choice but I can’t ever see us going back to live. A little while back we thought that we might have to return as the property market dipped but fortunately Steve has managed to find a job in Gibraltar so we are definitely here to stay for as long as it’s possible.
